THE INSECT COLLECTION
Each student will collect and prepare a boxed presentation of at least 25 insects.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 25 properly prepared and classified insects.
    • It is recommended that the collection contain more that 25 insects to make up for any that are improperly pinned or incorrectly classified. For example, if I have 30 insects and 5 of them are pinned poorly, I still have 25 acceptable insects to be graded.
    • Students will collect at least one insect from each of the following insect Orders:
    1. Coleoptera – the beetles
    2. Diptera – the flies (Di means two, ptera means wing, these will have only one pair of wings…)
    3. Hemiptera – the true bugs (Hemi means half and ptera means wing…)
    4. Hymenoptera – the bees, wasps and ants. (use extreme caution when capturing stingables…)
    5. Lepidoptera – the butterflies and moths
    6. Odonata – the dragonflies
    7. Orthorptera – the grasshoppers and crickets
    • The collections 25 insects can be from any order, we are not restricted to just these insects.
    • Insects collected that are not in these seven orders need to be classified correctly.
    • Any combination of numbers from the above orders is acceptable.
    • Extra points can be earned for having more than the minimum requirements.
    • All of the insects collected will be labeled in two ways. First, one general "heading" label for each order. Second, each pin will have its own small label indicating your name, where it was caught, and the date it was caught
    • All specimens will be pinned appropriately. Details of how to pin each insect will be discussed and resources with detailed instruction will be made available!

GRADING THE PROJECT

    • 50 POINTS – For the overall appearance of the collection.
    • 50 POINTS – For having properly pinned and presented specimens.
    • 50 POINTS – For having the insects correctly classified and labeled!
    • 25 POINTS – For having 25 good specimens.
